Easy Ways to Step Up Makeup Game
When your life is busy and you don't have time to devote hours in front of a mirror doing your makeup, it can seem like a daunting task trying to find a quick makeup routine which doesn't look like you just slapped a bunch of stuff on your face and ran out the door.
As a makeup artist, when I'm working on a client, my main focus of the application is ensuring the client looks healthy, awake, and natural. To achieve that look I use 5 steps: brightening, contouring, adding colour back into the skin, adding radiance, and adding depth to the eyes to make them stand out.
In this post I'm going to show you how you can take these 5 steps and use them in your makeup routine to quickly and easily take your everyday makeup to the next level.
1. Brighten The Face
I like to brighten the face by taking a concealer which is a shade or two lighter than the client's skin tone and applying a small amount to the places on the face you want to bring light to, typically in the center of the face. Those spots are under the eyes, down the bridge of the nose, center of the forehead, chin, above the lip, and along the side of the nostrils.
2. Contour To Shape The Face
One of my favourite steps of doing makeup is bronzer. The difference this one step makes in bringing shape and life into the face is huge. If I had to choose only one step to do, this would be it. To add warmth and shape into the face, take your bronzer and add it to the perimeter of the face.
Pro Tip: Start with a very small amount by swirling your brush in the bronzer, tapping off any excess, and then sweeping the brush over your wrist or hand once before applying it to the face. This is ensure there isn't too much colour on your brush.
A great starter bronzer is Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer. It is a great neutral shade and has a nice natural finish to it.
3. Strategically Add Colour
One of the easiest way to give your face a more youthful appearance is to add blush. It is a simple step that when done right, can take years off your face and instantly give you a healthy look. When applying blush to achieve a natural look, you are going to use it on more than just your cheeks. You are going to apply the blush in the crease of your eyes and lightly across the bridge of your nose and temples, as well. By applying blush in these areas, you are applying it to the areas of the face which would naturally flush if you were to blush. This gives the appearance of a healthy look.
4. Add Radiance
Have you ever seen someone with skin that looked so healthy it had this "glow from within" look? Hydrated and healthy skin has shine to it in all the right places, giving it an almost glass-like appearance. If your skin doesn't look like this, don't worry! We are going to fake it. To do this you're going to take your highlighter and run it along all of the high points of the face where the skin would naturally get a little dewy throughout the day. You'll apply it on your cheek bones, bridge of your nose, temples and center of the forehead, under the brow bone, and on your chin.
Pro Tip: Apply your highlighter with your fingers to help melt it into the skin. Also, apply it before your blush to really mimic that "glow from within" look.
A great highlighter for this is Hard Candy Baked Bronzer in Tiki.
5. Make The Eye Stand Out
The last step in achieving this look is making the eyes stand out. When going for a natural, put-together makeup look I steer clear of black eyeliner. It looks too harsh on the eyes and makes the face look disconnected. Instead, I opt for a brown shadow and run it along the lash line. This gives some shape and depth to the eyes, without overpowering the rest of the face.
Those are the 5 simple steps I take in my everyday makeup routine and on clients, when trying to achieve a quick, natural, but put together makeup look. They are easy to do and they don't require a lot of products to get the result you want.
With these steps, no one will be able to tell you had been up all night with a baby or binge watching Netflix until 3 am!
